The Baltic Sea Cycle Route: by region
Denmark's longest cycling route, the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, is a great way to explore our country's culture. Take a look at the different regions you can cycle through on the route - and their key highlights.
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route gives you the freedom to explore, at your leisure, our most diverse countryside: cornfields, windswept beaches, atmospheric woods and timeless Danish fishing villages on a journey to remember. We think it's a great way to experience the best of Danish lifestyle, from hygge to nature, castles and small town culture, and there's plenty to see along the way. These are the key highlights in each of our regions along the route.
South Zealand and Møn
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route stretches for 170 kilometres along the beautiful region of South Zealand and Møn. The region boasts some of the most beautiful natural areas in Denmark. Discover a treasure trove of landscapes as long, winding roads carry you alongside the Baltic Sea coastline, close to fjords, through dense forests and over hilly terrain to the highest point of Møn. Where the land meets the sea, you can stop and marvel at the dramatic cliffs, from Møns Klint in the south to Stevns Klint in the north.
Lolland-Falster
A quarter of The Baltic Sea Cycle Route goes through Lolland-Falster, known for historic manor landscapes, luxurious bed and breakfast stays and locally-produced food experiences. Biking through Lolland-Falster also gives you access to some of the “hidden” experiences such as “The Dodekalith” as well as the islands of Femø, Fejø and Vejrø.
Fyn
The beautiful island of Fyn is a paradise for cycling fans. Here you can immerse yourself in an island kingdom all of its own, with over 100 small islands connected by ferries and more than 1,200 km of pure bike paths. Special mentions should be given to the South Fyn Archipelago and the charming island of Ærø, which you'll see as you find your way along the south coast via Svendborg, then up via the romantic town of Nyborg in the east.
Lillebælt
The Baltic Sea Cycle Route runs for 96 km through the picturesque regions of Kolding, Fredericia, Nature Park Lillebælt, the largest in Denmark, and Middelfart. History come alive here, in the largest and best preserved city walls in Northern Europe in Fredericia and Koldinghus, and the last royal castle in Jutland, in Kolding. In Middlefart you can also feel the wind and refreshing ocean spray on your face as you bridgewalk 60 metres above the water.
Sønderjylland
In Sønderjylland, the Baltic Sea Cycle Route takes you from the cathedral city of Haderslev in the north to the maritime town of Aabenraa and historic Sønderborg in the south before you reach Fyn. On this exciting and varied course, you will discover lush beech forests and impressive fjords. You can also visit both the North Sea and the Baltic Sea on this part of the route.
West Zealand
From Korsør to Bisserup through Skælskør and Boeslunde, this part of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route winds for 42 kilometres through many picturesque villages, along the coast on a route lined by ancient churches and castles. Must see places of interest include the stunning architectural beauty of the Great Belt Bridge, the fairytale, sixteenth-centry castle Borreby Herreborg, and Guldagergaard, Northern Europe's largest ceramic studio.
